Creating a summer tablescape for those easy going days of summer....oh how I love those days. Simple and quick are my favorite ones.
When I was a little girl, my favorite time was summer and eating outdoors with my family... we usually spent at least one week by the beach at a rental home and dinner was brought outside and we would all eat together. Several families would join us every year so, many kids were present and it was just so much fun.
The setting was always simple, nothing fancy, and paper plates were used...and it was all about eating together and spending time with each other. Lots of laughter and singing happened too since my dad played the guitar. It was the best childhood ever.
Now I have created a tablescape thinking of all those times we spent together as a family back when I was a child....Today, it is all about getting together with our kids. Our kids are now grown and it gets harder and harder to eat dinner together...but we try to do it anytime we can and for that reason, I try to make it a little more special every time. This is how I created this setup:
ADD A TABLECLOTH
Keeping simplicity in mind, I created this tablescape with things I had on hand. The white tablecloth was sewn by me and I love to start a table with a simple tablecloth to give me a blank start to the tablescape. Use any neutral tablecloth you have on hand. A table-runner would work too.
USE WHAT YOU HAVE ON HAND
I used plastic gray plates that were purchased from Target last season and I grabbed my ramekins to place individual cherries on each plate. Of course these ramekins are usually for making desserts, etc., but I like to think outside the box and use them for anything necessary.
ADD PRETTY NAPKINS
These napkins are one of my favorites for summer...and, by any chance, are you like me?...you keep buying napkins when you see a cute set even though you really don't need them?... I am very guilty of this. Anywho...I love to play with napkins, it is the easiest way to change the look of a table by just changing them. When you use plates that are neutral, the napkins becomes the center piece of the setting and it gives it personality, so have fun with them...now you might understand why I keep getting more napkins.
Home Goods is always a great place to find great napkins and/or Pier1. I have listed some of the items I used below if you'd like to shop this look. Please note that these items might not be available identical to the ones I have but I have listed similar choices for you.
ADD AN UNEXPECTED TOUCH
For the centerpiece, I added a potted boxwood topiary from my garden on top of a natural placemat. Bringing the outdoors in makes this more summery in my eyes. I also added the miniature topiaries and the moss rocks for a special whimsical touch.
ENJOY A REFRESHING DRINK
We also love iced tea in this household and pretty much would have it every single day during the summer months. To make iced tea, I like to purchase the "Lipton Iced Tea Specially Blended for Ice Tea" and place 2 big tea bags in a heat-proof pitcher with 4 cups of boiling water. Let it brew for 3-5 minutes and remove the tea bags. Stir in 6 cups of ice cubes and let them melt. Keep in refrigerator until cold. You can sweeten the tea before adding the ice cubes but I usually don't...I just let everyone add their own sweetener. This iced tea lasts about 1/2 day in my household...so I make it often.
I love creating tablescapes that are inviting for my family and friends. The special touches makes this table setting a bit more memorable and ejoyable.
