Creating an outdoor fall tablescape is as easy as incorporating these three elements: lighting, texture and a few fall elements.
This same technique can be used for any season, really. If you just replace the season elements, in this case the pumpkins, birch wood and blankets and replace them with seashells, sea glass bottles and cool drinks, for example, then it becomes a summer table. You can do the same with any season.
I love the orange colors of fall, but here in Southern California we don’t see much of the season change, so I decided to keep the tablescape simple with touches of blue, white and tan and incorporating texture all around.
I decided to use green branches and a potted plant as my center/side decor since all the leaves of the trees around are still green so it felt natural to do that. By adding the birch logs it gives the illusion of fall, as if you are ready to use them to start a fire, plus it adds so much texture to the tablescape. One of our neighbors was cutting her birch tree and she let me get a few branches which I was so happy about. You can purchase some here if you can’t get a hold of some.
The basket also added texture here combined with the aged pot and some jute twine. These items together created the fall feeling I was looking for.
When I started the tablescape, I did not include the rattan placemats as you see below. I added them later because I wanted to add more texture. If you like a more simple tablescape, this works too.
A linen tablecloth covers the table and a blue throw blanket is folded and placed in the middle as a table runner to bring some color in. I added a wide burlap ribbon to each side of the blanket to bring more of the warm color into the table.
Also, to bring more of a fall hue to the table, I cut out paper leaves out of a lunch paper sack and tied the silverware and napkin together with a jute twine. So simple and inexpensive and I loved how the color flowed throughout the table.
Now for the lighting, I added these votives that I purchased from Amazon to give the whole table that warm cozy feeling. You can never have too many votives, in my eyes. Plus I added the baby boo pumpkins that I had from previous years.
I took pictures of the table using the rattan placemats and I also took pictures when I was not using them. I loved both looks but I preferred the one with the placemats better because it gave more texture to the table. Which one is your favorite?
A cozy blanket was placed on one of the far right chairs and more pumpkins and baskets were placed all around the table to add to the fall atmosphere. The blue ticking ruffled pillows that you see are from inside my home and I brought them outside to create a relaxed feeling and a welcoming space. And a toile pillow sham was added too since I have always loved a little french thrown in there.
Here are some sources for the dish towels and similar blue stripped napkins that I used in the tablescape in case you are looking for some. I had purchased the napkins from the Target dollar spot in the past, so always look there for great finds.
I created a cozy spot here, a little away from the table, to bring more charm to the space. A few pumpkins and baskets always create warmth in my eyes. And it is a great place to relax after dinner.
I try to purchase items after the season is over since you get better deals this way. Over the years, you'll have a great collection, though you do need to be patient. But if you are the inpatient kind, which I can be guilty of at times, I always look in Amazon for great deals. Like these baby boo pumpkins, they are so darling and you don't need to buy real ones every year. Also look at Hobby Lobby or Big Lots, you can find some great ones there at great prices.
These three elements: lighting, texture and a few fall items created this tablescape .... Creating a cozy outdoor space does not need to be elaborate, just use these tips and you too can create one too. I hope you are inspired.
Happy Fall!
